- Many services treat a crypto payment as one period: CoinGecko, and ExpressVPN for BitPay purchases, end the plan unless you pay again.
- A crypto subscription auto-renews only if you approved recurring charges with a cap in your wallet; the checkout says so before you sign.
- On Fianto, renewals come every 30 or 365 days with no reminder email, and you stop them by cancelling at fianto.xyz/my.
Why does a crypto payment not renew by itself?
A crypto payment does not renew by itself because nobody but the wallet owner can move the coins, and a normal payment gives nobody permission to come back for more. CoinGecko puts it in one line in its API docs: "There's no card on file to charge", so renewing means going through checkout again.
An automatic renewal needs something extra: an on-chain approval that lets a named party collect a set amount each period, with a program enforcing the limit. The mechanics, and the four ways merchants bill crypto on a schedule, are laid out in how crypto recurring payments work. This post is about the practical question: will the plan you bought renew, and what do you do about it.
Which services renew crypto payments on their own?
Of the services checked below on 15 October 2026, the ones that renew a crypto payment on their own all use a wallet approval; everything else asks you to pay again.
| Service | Renews on its own? | What happens at the end of a period |
|---|---|---|
| CoinGecko API, paid in crypto | No | Crypto is annual only. You run checkout again; reminders come 14 and 7 days before expiry, and API access pauses if payment does not land in time |
| ExpressVPN, bought through BitPay | No | The subscription "will end on the subscription date" and "will not renew automatically" |
| Helius, default USDC billing | No | An invoice in USDC each cycle, with a payment link by email and in the dashboard |
| Helius, with Crypto autopay added | Yes, once you add a wallet | Charged in USDC through the Solana Subscriptions program. If the wallet is short there is no automatic retry, and the project is suspended after 3 days unpaid |
| A Fianto plan on Solana | Yes | Pulled in USDC every 30 or 365 days; if the wallet is short, tried three more times within a day, then ended |
Helius is the useful case because it runs both models side by side. Its billing docs describe autopay, which they say is still rolling out, in one line: "Adding a wallet lets Helius charge your renewal invoices automatically in USDC." Without that wallet, the same plan is a reminder and a link. The difference is the approval, not the coin.
How can you tell if a crypto subscription will renew automatically?
A crypto subscription will renew automatically if the checkout asked you to approve future charges with a maximum per period; if it only asked you to pay an amount once, it will not. Look for these signs before you sign:
- A next-charge date. A one-off payment has no future date. A renewing plan tells you when the next charge comes.
- A ceiling per period. On a Fianto checkout the line reads "Most" followed by the merchant's name and "can charge", with the amount per period. That figure is fixed on Solana when you sign and cannot be raised later.
- Account rent in SOL. A Solana subscription opens an account that holds a little SOL: about 0.00144 SOL as of 15 October 2026, returned when you reclaim it after the subscription ends, plus about 0.00119 SOL once on a wallet's first subscription, not returned. Solana is cutting rent in steps, so the checkout shows the exact live amount. A one-off payment opens no account.
- The button wording. Fianto's button reads "Subscribe for" with the amount and the period, against "Pay" with the amount for a one-off payment.

If you paid by typing an address and sending coins to it, you approved nothing recurring. That payment covers one period, and the merchant will have to ask again.
What happens on renewal day when a crypto subscription does auto-renew?
On renewal day an auto-renewing Fianto subscription takes the period's charge from your wallet two minutes after the period ends, without asking you first. Fianto sends payers no renewal reminders, so there is no CoinGecko-style warning 14 days ahead. The date is in the customer portal and was on the checkout you signed.
The charge shows in your wallet history as a USDC transfer to the merchant, plus the network fee, a flat 0.01 USDC today on plans created since 6 October 2026. You sign nothing and pay no SOL for it: Fianto signs the renewal and pays its Solana fee.
If the wallet holds too little USDC, nothing is taken and the subscription turns past due. Fianto tries again one hour, six hours and a day after the period ended, and after the fourth failed try the subscription ends. A missed period is never charged later. What to check when that happens is in why a USDC subscription did not renew.
One approval, a fixed cap, and the renewal day explained in full.
Read how stablecoin auto renewal worksHow do you turn off auto-renew for a crypto subscription?
You turn off auto-renew by cancelling the subscription itself, which on Fianto means signing a cancel in the portal at fianto.xyz/my. Sign in with a message, which costs nothing and moves no funds, press Cancel subscription and approve the transaction in your wallet. The subscription stays active to the end of the period you paid for, and the portal has no undo.
The steps one by one are in how to cancel a crypto subscription and on the cancel a subscription docs page.
Should a merchant offer auto-renew for crypto payments?
A merchant with monthly plans should offer auto-renew, because a renewal that waits for the customer to act is a renewal that can lapse. CoinGecko shows the other path: it renews crypto by hand and offers crypto on annual plans only. For a SaaS team, pulled or invoiced renewals are the first row of what to check in a USDC payment gateway for SaaS.
Auto-renew has costs the customer feels. They need USDC in the wallet on the day and a little SOL for the first signature. If you sell with Fianto, tell customers yourself when renewals happen and link the portal, because Fianto sends them nothing. Customers without a wallet are better served by cards.
